General

The washing power is based on sapoin in the soap nuts' shucks, which dissolves in warm water and acts as a natural detergent. Unlike chemical detergents, soap nuts leave no chemical residues in clothes. Soap nuts are good for allergics, asthmatics and people with sensitive skin as they cause no irritation. Even nut allergics can safely use them.

Laundry

1-2 small pouches with 3-4 soap nut halves within are put into the drum of the washing machine. The amount can be changed according to how dirty the laundry is and you will soon know how many soap nuts your laundry requires. Soap nut shucks can be reused a few times before disposing of them with other biodegradable waste.
Soap nuts will leave the laundry soft, so there is no need for a fabric softener. Soap nuts can be used for machine and handwash and it is good for all fabrics, even silk and wool. When washing by hand, a small amount of soap nut solution is added in the water.
Soapnuts are unscented, but if you prefer your laundry scented, you can add a few drops of essential oil in the washing machine.

Soap nut solution can be made by boiling or soaking a handful of soap nuts in a liter of water. Boil water and poach soap nuts in it for at least 15 minutes or soak soap nuts in water overnight. Crushed nuts dissolve faster. Sieve soap nuts from the solution and store the solution in a cool place. The solution will be preserved for one week.

Soap nut solution has many uses:

- Cleaning and washing dishes, floors and metal surfaces. Soap nut solution effectively removes dirt, is 100% biological and biodegradable. It is excellent for cleaning drainage systems and can also be used in a dishwasher. Try with 2-3 tea spoons.
- When used as a shampoo, soap nut solution prevents dandruff, lice and other parasites. A travel shampoo can easily be made by putting four soap nut halves into a plastic water bottle.
- Washing fruit and vegetables: A few minutes' soak in soap nut solution removes surface chemical residues from fruit and vegetables.
- Polishing silverware, jewelry, cars and motorcycles. Removes dirt and grease, giving a glossy finish.
- Acts as a mordant in vegetable dyeing.
- Soap nut solution can also be used as an pesticide against many pests, such as snails and blight.
